A Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl, York Cup shape, produced in England circa 1915 under the direction of Daisy Makeig-Jones. Pattern Z4825 combines Orange Lustre with crimson mottling, gilded Oriental decoration and one of the most distinctive colour schemes within the Fairyland range.
The exterior is decorated with a gilt dragon amongst stylised cloud forms against a rich orange lustre ground. A Greek Key border encircles the rim, while the lustre surface displays amber, copper and crimson tonal variation.
The interior features Mother-of-Pearl Lustre with dark blue-dominant stainings creating a remarkable starry effect beneath the glaze. At the centre is a geometric gilt medallion incorporating Oriental motifs, surrounded by delicate gilded ornament.
Marked Wedgwood England and Z4825 to the underside. Its unusual combination of dragon decoration, geometric ornament and dramatic colour effects makes it a particularly attractive Fairyland Lustre pattern.
