This vintage glazed stoneware figure was produced by the Shiwan Pottery Factory in Foshan, Guangdong, circa 1950s. The court official is shown in formal robes, holding a ruyi sceptre in his right hand and a lingzhi mushroom in his left — both traditional Chinese symbols. The ruyi (如意), or "as you wish" sceptre, represents power, prosperity, and fulfilment, while the lingzhi mushroom (灵芝) is associated with immortality and spiritual strength.
The figure is finished in a rich oxblood glaze, with yellow and green oxide detailing on the robes and ornamental accents. The modelling is highly detailed, particularly around the facial features, beard, and official's cap. The base bears the impressed three-part hallmark of the Shiwan Pottery Factory (石湾制陶厂), including the model number 47, a temple lion emblem, and a square character seal.
Larger Shiwan figures like this were difficult to produce due to their size and glazing technique. Surviving examples in good condition are increasingly sought after by collectors of Chinese vintage ceramics.
