This bold and expressive Chinese stoneware figure was produced in the renowned Shiwan kilns of Guangdong during the mid-20th century. It depicts a dynamic warrior or legendary figure caught mid-stride, with his right hand raised in a commanding gesture and his left drawn behind him. His facial expression is especially vivid, with intense eyes, a furrowed brow, and sharply defined features including a crisply modelled beard and moustache. A small white forehead ornament adds further presence.

The robe is finished in a deep oxblood glaze, highlighted with green oxide accents and applied ceramic studs suggesting ornamental fastenings. The glaze is thick and glossy, with rich variation in tone across the sculptural folds. Around his waist, decorative ceramic belt elements and a sword hilt complete the ensemble—though minor losses are visible to some details on the back.

The underside bears three impressed marks: mould number 48, a stylised lion crest, and the square seal of the Shiwan Pottery Factory (石湾制陶厂), dating the piece to the 1950s-1970s. While unsigned, it was likely modelled from a design by a master sculptor such as Pan Yushu or Liu Zeiman, then cast and hand-finished in the collective-era factory workshops. Larger Shiwan sculptures like this were more difficult to fire without warping or cracking, making them highly sought after among collectors today.

Condition
Very good overall condition for its age and size. A few natural firing cracks are present on the unglazed interior edge of the base—typical of large hollow stoneware figures and formed during the kiln process. Minor losses are visible to the sword hilt and one decorative belt element at the back. The glaze remains vibrant and glossy with excellent colour retention and no structural damage.
