Samson Porcelain Figurines: 19th Century Rococo Shepherd & Shepherdess Pair

£655.00
This superb pair of hand-modelled and hand-painted hard-paste porcelain figurines was produced by the Samson factory in Paris during the 19th century, inspired by Derby originals. Each figure stands on a raised Rococo-style pierced base, richly adorned with applied flowers, gilding, and naturalistic greenery. The boy stands beside a tree trunk holding a hat filled with berries, with a dog at his feet. The shepherdess stands opposite with a resting sheep, raising her hand in playful defence.

The boy is dressed in a cobalt blue coat with puce lining and yellow floral breeches, while the girl wears a puce jumper, cobalt skirt, and yellow cape. The bases are hand-painted with a red pseudo-Derby crown mark and the Samson red windmill mark. The fine enamel decoration and gilded highlights demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship typical of Samson porcelain, celebrated for its museum-quality reproductions.

Handmade, hand-painted, and full of lively Rococo charm, these figures are ideal for collectors of 19th-century European porcelain, Derby-style reproductions, or as decorative highlights in period interiors.

Historical Background
The Samson factory, founded by Edmé Samson around 1845 in Paris, specialised in creating faithful reproductions of historic European and Asian porcelain, including Meissen, Chelsea, Derby, and Chinese porcelain. Over time, Samson pieces became highly collectible in their own right, admired for their artistry, superb modelling, and meticulous hand-painted decoration. Today, Samson porcelain is celebrated for its technical excellence and artistic beauty.

Condition
Very good antique condition. Crisp modelling, vibrant enamelling, and well-preserved gilding. Minor small chips to flowers and leaves. Small surface scratches to the tree behind the boy and a small chip to the paint at the base of the tree. The shepherdess is missing the fingertips of her left hand; both hands appear to have been professionally restored, with repainting to the front of the dress. The restorations are discreet and do not detract from the fine appearance. Please review all photos carefully as they form part of the description.
