This rare pair of Paris porcelain figures by Samson et Cie, dating to circa 1850s, is a fine example of the firm's Historicist production, emulating 18th-century English Chelsea porcelain. Finely modelled and hand-painted in soft pastel enamel colours with elegant gilt highlights, the figures represent Mars, god of war, and Bacchus, god of wine and festivity, from classical Roman mythology — corresponding to Ares and Dionysus in the Greek tradition.
Bacchus is portrayed joyfully nude, draped with a fur pelt, holding a bunch of grapes aloft in one hand and a wine cup in the other, symbolising vitality, abundance, and celebration. Mars is shown standing in classical armour with a plumed helmet, resting one hand on a shield decorated with a raised rooster motif. In Greek mythology, the rooster symbolised vigilance and bravery; in Roman times, the rooster was sacred to Mars, and cockfighting became popular as a symbol of martial courage.
The pierced scrollwork bases are embellished with delicate floral touches and fine gilding, reflecting the Rococo Revival tastes of mid-19th century France. The reverse of each figure bears Samson's hand-painted gold anchor mark — a homage to the Chelsea manufactory — alongside an impressed "S" on the undersides, both typical identifiers of Samson's work during this period.
These figures are a fine example of the Historicist movement in French decorative arts, combining Neoclassical themes with Rococo Revival ornamentation. They would make an excellent addition to any collection of antique French porcelain, mythological art, or decorative sculpture.
