A large and highly decorative porcelain armorial ewer by Samson, Paris, dating from the late 19th century. The piece is modelled in an elaborate helm-shaped form, with a tall undulating rim, pronounced pouring lip and a bold scroll handle, all raised on a pedestal foot.
The surface is richly decorated with polychrome floral sprays, stylised flowering branches and fine arabesques, applied over a crisp white porcelain ground with subtle low relief. Generous gilding defines the rim, handle, borders and moulded details, reflecting Samson's refined reinterpretation of 18th-century armorial and Compagnie des Indes porcelain within an elegant Parisian aesthetic.
The ewer bears a finely painted armorial crest with the Latin motto "Sola Virtus Invicta" ("Virtue alone is unconquered"), a heraldic emblem and motto traditionally associated with the English aristocratic Howard family, Dukes of Norfolk. The composition shows a shield with a diagonal band and cross motifs, surmounted by a crown and flanked by heraldic animal supporters, in a decorative Samson interpretation.
Large-scale armorial ewers of this type were produced in limited numbers and are particularly sought after by collectors of Samson porcelain and historicist decorative wares.
Technically, the upper body and pedestal base are constructed as separate elements joined by an internal metal pin, a known Samson practice for large, ambitious forms.
