Royal Worcester Porcelain Figure Base for a Cricklite Fairy Lamp, c. 1891
Exquisite Royal Worcester porcelain figure, commissioned by Samuel Clarke for use with a Cricklite Fairy Lamp. This rare neoclassical statuette, modelled by James Hadley (1837-1903), depicts a Greek water bearer holding a vessel in her left hand and balancing an urn on her head. The figure is finely executed with richly detailed flowing robes, a ruddy ivory-toned body, and gold-toned drapery with gilt highlights.
Cricklite Fairy Lamps, produced by Samuel Clarke, were slow-burning candle nightlights originally designed to burn for eleven hours. Clarke, a noted candle maker, patented multiple holders for his candles, with his fairy lamps becoming highly popular during the Victorian era. Other manufacturers supplied lamp parts and art glass shades for his designs.
