Rare Wedgwood Lustre Pair of Three-Handled Loving Mugs, Daisy Makeig-Jones, c.1915

A beautifully matched pair of Wedgwood lustre three-handled Loving Mugs, created by celebrated designer Daisy Makeig-Jones around 1915. The first mug follows the Decoration Book description for pattern Z4827, with a rich Ruby Lustre exterior decorated with butterflies and oriental-inspired motifs, and Mother-of-Pearl Lustre interior featuring a butterfly at centre. The base bears the Wedgwood mark with pattern number. The second mug features a luminous green lustre exterior with two vivid panels: a coiled gilt snake on one side and a dancing dragon on the reverse. Inside, a green-toned Mother-of-Pearl ground holds a central medallion showing the coiled snake enclosing a small monkey. The base has a factory stamp; the pattern number is worn with age. Both mugs have three loop handles with a single gilt line down the center, gilt rims, and the crisp detailing characteristic of Makeig-Jones's work. Pieces in this form were among the most popular shapes for lustre decoration, yet finding a complete and complementary pair in such fine condition is exceptionally rare. It's worth noting the unique shape of these handmade miniature cups, and one might assume their production was limited. Most likely, they were primarily intended for children, and acquiring such a marvelous little cup would have been a delightful gift. These pieces would make a distinctive addition to a serious Wedgwood collection or an outstanding decorative display.
