A rare antique Wedgwood Lustre bowl, pattern Z5176, designed by James Hodgkiss - the master draughtsman and chief designer who personally mentored Daisy Makeig-Jones, later renowned for Fairyland Lustre. This octagonal bowl features a striking powder-blue ground, finely hand-painted with lifelike lily-of-the-valley blossoms on both the outside and inside - a rare detail even among limited Wedgwood art pieces. Several such ornamental designs, was misattributed to Makeig-Jones, are now recognized as the work of Hodgkiss, the creative leader at Wedgwood during the early 20th century. His expertise and encouragement shaped a whole generation of decorators and contributed directly to the factory's success. Such bowls are exceptionally rare on the collector's market. The bowl is marked Wedgwood & England in brown and hand-numbered Z5176 beneath the base.
Condition: Excellent for its age. Two lower corners show minute changes in the blue enamel, only visible under magnification; otherwise pristine, with perfect gold and crisp enamels. Reflections may appear in the images — these are not flaws in the item, but rather visual effects caused by the lustre glaze. Slight distortions or highlights are a natural result of its iridescent surface.
