A rare pair of Parian biscuit porcelain figures by Minton & Co., Stoke-on-Trent, c.1845. Known as "The Gardeners," the young man offers fruit from his basket while the girl gathers flowers in her apron. The unglazed, marble-like Parian body and Greek-key circular bases typify Minton's earliest work and the emerging Victorian romantic style.
Minton's early Parian figures were often unmarked, produced before the firm's Great Exhibition success in 1851. This pair captures the pastoral ideal of youthful innocence and rural simplicity, rendered with exquisite precision and grace.
