This rare pair of early 19th-century Staffordshire commemorative saucers honours the tragic death of Princess Charlotte of Wales in 1817. Each deep saucer features a striking black transfer print of Britannia mourning at a tomb, flanked by weeping angels and the motto "TO THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS CHARLOTTE." The design is enhanced with delicate puce lustre bands, typical of early Regency-era mourning ware.
These saucers were created during the intense public mourning following the death of Princess Charlotte, the heir to the British throne and daughter of George, the Prince Regent.
