Meissen porcelain saucer from the Marcolini period, dating to circa 1774-1814. A finely potted hard-paste piece with a delicate still-life composition of fruit, vegetables and scattered flowers at the centre, painted in refined polychrome enamels. The cavetto is enclosed by a distinctive blue ribbon-twist border with gilding, giving the piece a balanced and elegant appearance.
The underside bears the underglaze blue crossed swords with star, the recognised mark of the Marcolini period. The saucer belongs to the phase named after Count Camillo Marcolini, a leading Saxon court official who held the offices of Lord Chamberlain, Privy Councillor and General Director of the Academies, and directed the Meissen manufactory from 1774 to 1814. Under Marcolini, decoration became more restrained and classically balanced, with greater emphasis on the white porcelain ground as part of the composition.
A refined and authentic small Meissen piece of the late 18th century, appealing for its elegant simplicity, characteristic border and well-preserved painting.
