Rare Jacob Petit Porcelain Pagoda Perfume Bottle c.1835-1845

£1,400.00
An exceptionally rare French porcelain perfume bottle in the form of a seven-tiered Chinese pagoda, produced by the Jacob Petit manufactory in Paris, circa 1835-1845. Unlike the majority of surviving examples, this piece retains its original interlocking stopper, an important feature as these delicate covers were frequently broken or lost.

Jacob Petit became one of the leading innovators of French Rococo Revival porcelain, celebrated for his imaginative Chinoiserie designs and vibrant colour palettes. This example displays his characteristic apple-green ground, lavish gilding and finely hand-painted floral reserves, while the tiered pagoda roofs create one of the factory's most distinctive architectural forms.

The bottle is ingeniously constructed in two sections, with the lower portion forming the perfume reservoir and the upper pagoda serving as the original fitted stopper. The underside bears the authentic underglaze cobalt-blue J.P. factory mark together with faint incised workman's marks.
Complete pagoda-form perfume bottles are considerably scarcer than incomplete examples. A related Jacob Petit pagoda flask is preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, although its original stopper no longer survives.
