A finely modelled and richly painted figure from the Derby Porcelain Manufactory, c.1775-1780, representing James Quin (1693-1766) in the role of Sir John Falstaff, Shakespeare's most beloved comic knight. The design follows James McArdell after Francis Hayman (c.1760; British Museum). Falstaff stands with sword and gilt shield on a scroll-moulded base adorned with flowers, a small "bill" tucked in his belt symbolising his debts and merrymaking.

Marked to base with impressed 291 and painter's No 5. Cited by Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848 (London, 1990, pp.314-316, 339). Comparable pieces in the British Museum and V&A.

Condition
Partial gilding loss on the shield; hairline visible on sword; small chip to feather on hat; otherwise excellent antique condition. Checked under UV — no restoration.
