An exceptional pair of Derby porcelain candlestick figures known as the Ranelagh Dancers, c.1760. Inspired by the grand masquerade held at Ranelagh Gardens, London, in May 1759, they capture the elegance, costume, and theatricality of Georgian high society.
Each depicts a finely dressed couple before flowered bocage with tulip-form sconces. Made at the height of Derby's Rococo period, these models combine superb modelling, hand-painted detail, and remarkable preservation. Figures like these were used as centrepieces on dessert tables in the 18th century, reflecting the owner's taste and social refinement.
The pair corresponds to Bradshaw (Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848, E17, fig. 75). The British Museum owns only the female figure; this set survives complete, with both sconces intact—a museum-quality rarity.

Female: Height 28.5 cm · Width 18 cm · Depth 13 cm · Weight 1,487 g
Condition
Male: candle socket pinned, minor frits, small hat feather loss.
Female: branch re-joined, tiny frits, bow chip.
Both show natural kiln marks typical of 18th-century porcelain. Excellent antique condition overall.
