Rare Continental Maiolica Chinoiserie Vase with Cover, c. 1860–1880

£1,200.00
A striking monumental continental maiolica vase and cover dating to the mid-19th century, circa 1860-1880. Executed in tin-glazed earthenware, the vase is conceived as a fully sculptural decorative object, with a dense stippled ground and extensive applied relief. The surface is animated by chinoiserie scenes with pagodas, garden landscapes, scrolling foliage and numerous figural details. The imagery reflects a European imaginative interpretation of China, typical of decorative ceramics of this period.

The construction is complex, with multiple separately modelled elements applied after firing. Originally, seated figures were positioned near both handles; one survives in damaged condition, while the others are now missing. Further small figural elements are integrated into architectural niches at the lower register. The domed cover is surmounted by a seated figure and fits into an octagonal mouth, emphasising the architectural character of the design.

Comparable examples are recorded in Christie's archives, described as English majolica chinoiserie vases and covers, circa 1860. English makers such as Mason's also produced large stoneware vessels with related relief decoration, reflecting the wider European fascination with sculptural chinoiserie ceramics in the 19th century.
