This exceptionally rare Staffordshire bowl was produced in 1817 to commemorate the death of Princess Charlotte of Wales, daughter of George, the Prince Regent, and Caroline of Brunswick. Made from creamware and decorated with puce lustre bands and detailed black transfer print, the design is rich in symbolic mourning imagery.
The front features a deeply emotive black transfer scene depicting Britannia mourning at a tomb, accompanied by a globe, angels, and a weeping willow, with the inscription:
"TO THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS CHARLOTTE."
Charlotte's sudden death during childbirth in November 1817 shocked the nation, and she was mourned as the future Queen of England. Her passing triggered a wave of royal mourning memorabilia, of which this bowl is a particularly fine and rare example.
