A beautiful pair of late 19th-century porcelain figural candlesticks, possibly produced by Sutherland & Sons of Staffordshire, and designed in the elegant Neoclassical style.

Each candlestick is formed as a seated classical female figure on a stepped circular base highlighted with gilding. One figure embraces a stylised dolphin with gilded scales, while the other supports an urn-shaped candle holder. The flowing drapery, graceful poses and mythological inspiration create a refined and timeless decorative effect.

One candlestick bears an impressed "S&S" mark and model number 159, possibly linking the pair to Sutherland & Sons, a Longton manufacturer known for decorative Victorian porcelain. Although a definitive attribution cannot be made with complete certainty, the quality, style and marking are entirely consistent with late Victorian Staffordshire production.

The combination of white porcelain, delicate gilding and classical subject matter makes these candlesticks highly versatile decorative pieces. They work beautifully on a mantelpiece, sideboard, console table or within a collection of Victorian decorative arts.

The threaded fitting inside one sconce suggests a historic conversion for lamp use, a feature occasionally found on decorative porcelain figures of this period.
