This finely painted and highly decorative pair of Japanese Satsuma vases has strong commercial and visual appeal, combining a recognised Hododa mark with very pleasing quality of decoration and an attractive matched presentation. The pair works well together in size, shape and decorative balance, making it much more effective than two unrelated cabinet pieces.
The painting is of very good quality, with exceptionally delicate detail throughout. The figures are handled with care and character, the dragon motif is lively and well composed, and the raised moriage enriches the surfaces with texture, relief and depth. Together with the surviving gilding, this gives the pair a refined and luxurious decorative presence.
A major positive factor is the Hododa mark, which places the pair within a recognised and commercially desirable Satsuma group. This is an important strength and makes the vases more attractive from a collecting point of view than an unmarked pair of similar appearance.
