A richly decorated and finely hand-painted pair of Japanese Satsuma vases, signed for Manpei, Kobe, Japan, and dating to the early Showa period, circa 1930s-1940s. The pair has a strong decorative presence: each vase is 25.5 cm high, with a substantial weight of over 1 kg, making them impressive display pieces rather than small cabinet vases.
The decoration is especially attractive, showing elegant birds among peonies, flowering branches, blue blossoms, grasses and soft landscape forms. The birds are painted with very careful attention to detail, including fine feather work, delicate outlines and expressive heads. The flowers and foliage are also richly worked, with dense hand-applied gilding and precise brushwork throughout.
The cream crackle-glazed ground is typical of Satsuma-style ceramics, while the gilt rims, red-and-gold shoulder borders and ornamental foot bands give the pair a refined and luxurious appearance. The bases are marked in English "Hand Paint Satsuma / Manpei / Kobe Japan" and with a red square Japanese seal reading 薩摩 / 萬平, Satsuma / Manpei.
Both vases are in excellent condition. The enamel, paint and gilding are very well preserved, with no visible damage, cracks or restoration. A highly decorative pair for collectors of Japanese ceramics, Satsuma ware, bird-and-flower painting and elegant early 20th-century interiors.
