A superb example of Kyoto-style miniature Satsuma ware from the Meiji period (circa 1890-1910), this finely detailed vase displays the exceptional artistry associated with Chōsei (長生), an established studio decorator.
The body features figural panels with haloed female and elderly male figures, set in ethereal naturalistic surroundings. Behind the central female figure, likely representing Kannon, appears a dark spirit or demonic form with wide eyes — a visual trope of spiritual guardianship in Japanese art. Stylised pine trees, mist, clouds and traditional garments are rendered in polychrome enamels and highlighted with raised and flat gilding. Decorative panels of brocade-style patterning complete the upper sections, creating a rich and layered effect.
The finely crackled glaze is typical of Kyoto Satsuma ware. The underside bears a rectangular gold mark: 長生造 (Chōsei-zō), translating to "Made by Chōsei", a known name within Meiji period miniature production.
