An English decorative charger plate produced by Mason's in the early 20th century. The vibrant yellow ground immediately draws attention, providing a striking backdrop for a stylised exotic bird rendered in blue and gold, surrounded by floral ornament. The decoration combines transfer printing with hand-applied enamels and gilding, creating a rich, luminous surface. The gently scalloped rim with gilt edging gives the piece a refined, elegant profile typical of Edwardian display wares, circa 1915.
Inspired by late 19th-century Mason's patterns, the design reflects the widespread fascination with Japanese art and decorative imports that shaped European taste at the turn of the century. Such charger plates were intended as decorative accents for interiors rather than for everyday dining.
The base bears the Mason's Patent Ironstone mark, the registered design number Rd No 652974 (British Registered Design system, Board of Trade), impressed factory codes "W5H", and a small handwritten factory reference "c. 1460", consistent with Mason's internal production practices.
Dimensions and weight: diameter 26.5 cm, height 3 cm, weight 579 g.
Condition: on the reverse, a very small and localised area of enamel yellowing, barely visible. Otherwise in ideal condition.
