A rare matched pair of small decorative posy vases produced by Mason's around 1900, decorated in the vivid Bird and Peony variant of the Flying Bird family pattern. The composition combines a bird in flight with a large dominant peony bloom, creating a strong Oriental-inspired visual rhythm.
The decoration is built on an underglaze-blue outline transfer-printed framework, overpainted with rich hand-applied enamel colours and enhanced with selective gilded accents, particularly to the bird's wings and fine ornamental details.
This bold decorative language reflects Mason's late 19th-century shift toward highly colourful interior display wares. While the pattern is more often encountered on larger vessels and chargers, the small globular posy-vase form was produced in noticeably smaller quantities and is far less frequently seen today.
Both bases carry the crowned Mason's Patent Ironstone China factory mark.
A scarce decorative form within the Bird and Peony series, highly desirable to collectors of Mason's Oriental patterns.
