This large signed Japanese Satsuma bowl is an exceptionally attractive Meiji-period piece by the renowned master Shizan, combining scale, refined decoration and outstanding preservation in a form that reads instantly as a serious statement object. At 25 cm across, with its softly lobed rim and beautifully balanced body, it has the visual impact of a true centrepiece rather than a small decorative bowl.
The interior is painted with an elegant scene of court ladies beside a boat, bridge, waterfall and temple buildings, while the exterior carries a continuous panoramic landscape of bijin, pavilions, flowering trees and distant hills. The artistic quality is immediately apparent. The faces are delicately painted, the robes are richly patterned, and the whole composition is built with fine gilding, soft enamels and a luminous crackled ivory ground. The decorative black-and-gold border frames the entire piece with real authority and refinement.
The base bears the Shimazu crest above the signature 志山, read as Shizan, a well-known and respected Satsuma master whose work is valued for its decorative beauty and collectable appeal.
