A remarkable large Japanese Satsuma charger from the Meiji period, richly decorated with two peacocks among flowering peonies, trailing wisteria, blossom branches and small birds. This is a highly decorative gallery-scale piece, measuring 31 cm in diameter and weighing 1379 grams, with the strong visual presence expected from a serious collector's object.
The charger is especially impressive for the quality of its raised moriage decoration. Moriage is the traditional raised enamel technique used to build up textured details on the surface. Here it is used with great skill across the peacocks' feathers, the floral centres, the branches and the gilt outlines. The long tail of the principal peacock is beautifully modelled with repeated raised details, white accents and fine gilded linework, giving the bird a luxurious and almost sculptural quality.
The flowers are painted in elegant shades of pink, coral, white, green and aubergine, with extensive gilding that gives the entire composition richness and depth. The work is refined even at close range, showing the careful hand of an accomplished Satsuma decorator.
The underside bears a gilt-on-brown rectangular Satsuma mark with the Shimazu mon above the characters 薩摩, reading Satsuma. The mark does not give a named artist, but the style and technique are consistent with Japanese Satsuma export ware of the late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1890-1915.
