Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma Cobalt & Gold Vase Pair Meiji Japan

£1,300.00
An elegant pair of Kyoto Satsuma vases by the renowned Kinkozan workshop, dating to c.1890-1905. Each compact ovoid vase carries a beautifully painted garden scene with ladies reading and playing music beneath flowering trees. The reverse shows rich peonies and bamboo with butterflies on a fine ivory crackle ground. Deep cobalt panels at the shoulders and bases are decorated with raised gilt maple leaves and grasses.

One base is signed 金光山 (Kinkozan). The second, though unsigned, was clearly decorated as its original companion.

Measurements
Vase 1 - Height: 12 cm / 4.72″; Diameter: 8.7 cm / 3.43″; Weight: 219 g
Vase 2 - Height: 12.5 cm / 4.92″; Diameter: 8.7 cm / 3.43″; Weight: 257 g

Condition
One vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration under UV. The companion vase has a small rim chip with a discreet, professional repair to part of the lip, not disturbing the cobalt or gilding. Importantly, the raised gold over the cobalt—normally the first area to wear—remains unusually strong across both pieces.
