A richly decorated Japanese Satsuma bowl from the Kyoto school, painted to an exceptional export standard. The interior depicts an elegant riverside festival scene beneath flowering cherry branches, with figures outlined in fine gilt and pastel enamels over a softly stippled ground.
The exterior forms a dramatic contrast: a deep gosu cobalt field almost entirely occupied by two long, raised-gilt dragons in pursuit of the flaming jewel. Their scales and whiskers are built from thousands of minute strokes, giving a lively, shimmering surface. The base carries the Shimazu crest and a stylised four-character signature associated with the Kyoto Satsuma circle, c.1890-1910.
