A fine antique Japanese brass and mixed-metal openwork dish from the late Meiji period (c. 1890), of gallery quality. The central medallion depicts Benzaiten, goddess of music and eloquence, riding a dragon above stylised waves. Crafted in brass with overlaid and inlaid mixed metals, it combines piercing, chasing and gilding to create a luminous surface.
This Komai-style work exemplifies Kyoto's finest metal craftsmanship, where samurai armourers turned to luxury export art at the close of the 19th century.
