A characterful pair of faience (tin-glazed earthenware) Cossack figurines, created by Marcell Goldscheider in Stoke-on-Trent, England. One figure depicts a singing Cossack playing a balalaika, while the other features a dancing Cossack woman mid-movement. These expressive ceramics celebrate Eastern European folk tradition with sculptural detail and vibrant hand-painted surface decoration.
Made of earthenware with a faience-style glaze, the figures have a lightly matt finish with soft, earthy tones in salmon, russet, cream, and ochre. Both pieces bear the signature "Rybak," likely the modeller, and are inscribed with model numbers 458 (male) and 459 (female). Each is also marked with the official Marcell Goldscheider England stamp at the base.
Marcell Goldscheider, son of the founder of the famous Goldscheider Vienna factory, established his ceramics business in England after fleeing Austria in 1938. He worked with Myott and later opened his own studio in Hanley, producing distinctive figurines that are now highly sought after by collectors.
These rare examples would make an excellent addition to collections of Goldscheider, Art Deco ceramics, or Eastern European folk art. Ideal as display sculptures or statement pieces in a period interior.
