A rare German porcelain inkstand from Saxony, dating to circa 1790-1810. The piece is formed as a square base raised on four gilt ball feet, decorated with restrained hand-painted floral and rocaille motifs. At the centre is a cylindrical ink well.
The tall pyramidal cover is densely covered with Schneeballen decoration, composed of hundreds of tiny applied porcelain rosettes, each individually modelled and applied by hand. A stylised orchid-type flower crowns the cover. Such elaborate desk objects were produced for refined interiors and special commissions, making this an unusual and highly decorative survival from the turn of the 19th century.
