This impressive antique centrepiece by Ernst Wahliss features a standing woman holding a wide bowl vase, with a young boy leaning affectionately against the reverse. A highly detailed sculptural composition, the piece is finished in Wahliss' signature soft ivory and beige glaze with subtle gold and blue painted accents. The modelling is exceptional, particularly in the facial expressions and folds of the clothing, which demonstrate the quality associated with Wahliss' finest work produced at the Turn-Teplitz factory.
The underside bears the factory mark for "Ernst Wahliss, Made in Austria," along with the Vienna crown shield, model number 4725, impressed number 3, and other incised factory codes. This places the piece firmly within the 1897-1906 date range, during the transitional period when Hans and Erich Wahliss produced high-quality reproductions of Imperial Vienna porcelain after acquiring historic moulds.
Suitable as a dramatic table centrepiece or decorative display sculpture, this piece is an outstanding example of turn-of-the-century Austrian figural porcelain and would make a striking addition to any Art Nouveau or Viennese decorative arts collection.
Historical Background
Ernst Wahliss began his career in 1863 in Vienna and quickly gained prominence as a leading porcelain and ceramics merchant. In 1894, he purchased the Alfred Stellmacher factory in Turn-Teplitz. After his death in 1900, his sons expanded production by acquiring moulds from the Imperial and Royal Porcelain Manufactory, creating finely modelled works under the Vienna crown mark from 1897-1906. The workshop became known for its elegant, sculptural centrepieces and busts, highly prized today by collectors of Austro-Hungarian porcelain.
