Produced by Edmé Samson & Cie, Paris, around 1890, this attractive pair of armorial porcelain plates was inspired by the celebrated Chinese Export porcelains made for European noble families during the eighteenth century.
The moulded borders are richly decorated with colourful famille rose enamels, delicate gilding and raised bianco-sopra-bianco ornament creating an elegant lace-like effect. Floral sprays in pink, purple, turquoise and iron-red enliven the white ground and frame the central heraldic decoration.
At the centre appears a coat of arms with an azure shield bearing a golden lion, supported by a wolf and lion, beneath a crest showing an arm holding an arrow. A pink ribbon carries the motto FORTIS IN BELLO — Brave in War or Strong in Battle. The heraldry is most likely associated with the Irish-Norman Cantillon family of Ballyheigue.
The reverse bears Samson's characteristic faux-Chinese mark. Famous for its museum-quality reproductions, the Paris workshop became one of the most respected names in nineteenth-century decorative arts. Today Samson porcelain is collected worldwide and regularly appears in major international auction sales.

Condition
Excellent antique condition. No chips, cracks or restoration. Minor wear to the gilding consistent with age. Both plates display exceptionally well and retain fresh enamels and strong gilding.
