Coalport porcelain serving dishes, England, early 19th century, produced during the John Rose period and decorated in the so-called Union pattern, one of the most refined botanical schemes used by the factory in the first quarter of the 19th century. The dishes are made in an elaborate Regency dessert form with a strong sculptural profile and a distinctive pierced rococo crest, a shape intended for high-quality dessert and serving services rather than everyday tableware. They are decorated with a rich cobalt blue ground, enhanced by finely burnished gilding in scrolling vine and foliate motifs. The centres are hand-painted with carefully executed botanical sprays, reflecting the early 19th-century English interest in botanical illustration and natural history, an area in which Coalport excelled under John Rose. The Union pattern is associated with early Coalport production and demonstrates the factory's mastery of combining coloured grounds, refined gilding and precise botanical painting.
