Guanyin (also Quan Yin/Kannon) is the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Compassion, often called the "Goddess of Mercy." Blanc de Chine figure from Dehua (Fujian), early 20th century. Guanyin stands on waves with a clearly modelled dragon head at the front. Right hand holds a ruyi (lingzhi) with the mushroom-shaped head — a sign of authority and, in Chinese belief, immortality. On the left side is an open basket with a fish. Bead garlands with tassels across the chest and back.
The "Fish-basket Guanyin" theme is known in museum collections and major auctions; our piece is a good Dehua workshop example of the period. Comparable Fish-basket Guanyin figures are recorded in the British Museum and the Birmingham Museum of Art; collectors value the clear iconography, dragon base, and intact applied details.
Condition:
Small chip to a leaf on the basket (barely visible, felt by touch). Factory seam at the neck from mould assembly, not a crack or repair. Otherwise excellent.
