Rare early Wedgwood porcelain bowl, pattern Z4832, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones, c.1915. The exterior features a beautiful mother-of-pearl lustre glaze, hand-painted with richly gilded, pastel-toned butterflies, each uniquely detailed with underglaze polychrome painting. This early innovation by Makeig-Jones adds vibrancy and depth to each butterfly motif, which were originally based on historic Wedgwood designs and then transformed with whimsical, almost anthropomorphic touches. The interior is finished in brilliant orange lustre—Daisy's favourite—accented with mottled underglaze crimson and a medallion of butterflies within an oriental-inspired pattern. Each bowl in this series is unique, as the exact colour combinations and butterfly arrangements were individually varied by the artist, making this example especially striking and rare. Produced from 1914 to 1929, the Butterfly Lustre range became the second most sought-after Wedgwood lustre pattern of its time, surpassed only by the Dragon Lustre. Base marked: Wedgwood, England, Z4832. This striking Wedgwood bowl is not only a rare collector's piece, but would also make a unique gift for anyone who appreciates fine porcelain and early 20th-century design.
Condition: this bowl remains in outstanding condition, with its lustre, gilding, and painting all exceptionally well preserved. Reflections may appear in the images — these are not flaws in the item, but rather visual effects caused by the lustre glaze. Slight distortions or highlights are a natural result of its iridescent surface.
