Chinese Republic carved soapstone figurine of Shou (壽),also known as Shouxing 壽星.
Beautiful antique carved figurine of Shou (壽), also known as Shouxing 壽星, a god of Chinese cosmology also represented as a star of the South Pole, believed to wield power over the life spans of mortals. Tastefully carved from white-black soapstone. Very find detail to the face and staff speak to the high skill of the craftsman.
According to legend, he was carried in his mother's womb for ten years before being born, and was already an old man when delivered. He is recognized by his high, domed forehead and the peach which he carries as a symbol of immortality, and a staff in his other hand.
Dating to early Chinese Republic period.
Fine work and special attention paid to details, white-black soapstone complimenting the original soapstone stand. The figurine is heavy and robust.
Tiny white scratch on the head and top of the staff and a few small white dots on the stone. Excellent condition, please carefully regard all photos.
