An elegant antique Dresden porcelain covered potpourri urn produced by the celebrated Carl Thieme manufactory in Potschappel around 1901. The authenticity of the piece is confirmed by the underglaze cobalt blue SP Dresden mark. The underside also bears the impressed factory model number 1701 with an additional impressed letter N.

This luxurious egg-shaped urn was designed to hold dried fragrant flowers or scented potpourri while serving as an impressive decorative object. Raised on a finely pierced rococo pedestal and fitted with graceful openwork scroll handles, it displays the refined craftsmanship that made Carl Thieme one of Dresden's most respected porcelain manufacturers.

The brilliant white porcelain is beautifully hand-painted with miniature gallant scenes inspired by the fêtes galantes tradition established by Jean-Antoine Watteau. Rich gilding, delicate floral sprays and magnificent hand-modelled Blütenbelag flowers create a lively three-dimensional surface. Developed under the artistic direction of Karl August Kuntzsch, this elaborate floral ornament became one of the defining characteristics of Carl Thieme porcelain.

The domed cover is crowned by a charming kneeling putto holding a small bird, providing an elegant sculptural finish to the composition. Combining fine painting, exceptional modelling and remarkably well-preserved floral decoration, this urn is a superb display piece for collectors of antique Dresden porcelain.

Condition:
Very good antique condition. One wing of the putti finial is missing. The small bird held by the putto remains intact. The delicate encrusted floral decoration has survived remarkably well, with almost all flowers preserved, an uncommon feature for Dresden porcelain of this type.
