Elegant antique porcelain jug, an example of the famous violet lustreware that Sunderland is famous for, designed in the "Pink Splash" style with organic daubs to the paint on the body.
Decorated to one side with a transferware pattern celebrating 'The Shipwright's Arms' - an old Inn that still stands on the banks of the River Wear today. The decoration on this jug has decorative elements that are very similar to those used by Carr and Patton in North Shields c. 1840. However, the short spout is perhaps more typical of the Newcastle Pottery.
The other side is inscribed with a short verse, often found on mid 19th century lustre ceramics:
Far from home across the sea
To foriegn climes I go,
While far away O think of me,
And I'll remember you.
Note the spelling mistake on the word "foreign". A sure sign of authenticity.
Date to c. 1830.
Excellent antique condition, no cracks, chips or other damage, remarkable for a jug of this age.
