A rare and important Thai ceramic dish from the Sukhothai period (14th-15th century), made in the kilns of Si Satchanalai, present-day Thailand. This large stoneware piece is decorated with two stylised fish in the centre medallion, painted in iron-oxide underglaze and covered by a transparent glaze that has developed a fine crackle over time.
The fish are surrounded by flowing vegetal and floral brushwork, with dynamic lines characteristic of Sukhothai artisanship. The reverse is decorated with concentric circles and stylised cloud motifs. The unglazed footrim shows firing scars and stilt marks consistent with authentic 14th-century kiln techniques.
The dish's generous size (36.2 cm / 14.25″ in diameter) is uncommon among surviving examples and highlights its importance. These wares were widely exported in the medieval maritime trade and have been recovered from shipwrecks such as the Royal Nanhai.
Now preserved in major museum collections including the Bangkok National Museum and the Musée Guimet, Sukhothai ceramics are recognised by UNESCO for their cultural significance and technical mastery.
