A rare and historically significant commemorative Staffordshire deep saucer, dating to around 1817. Made to honour the death of Princess Charlotte, it is decorated with puce lustre borders and black transfer-printed scenes. The central image features Britannia weeping beside a tomb with the inscription "TO THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS CHARLOTTE", flanked by symbolic motifs including angels and a globe.
This piece reflects the national mourning that followed the untimely death of Princess Charlotte, the only child of George, the Prince Regent. Her passing in 1817 during childbirth deeply affected the public and led to a surge in memorial wares.
