This rare antique Staffordshire tea cup and saucer set was produced around 1817 to commemorate the tragic death of Princess Charlotte of Wales. The only child of George, the Prince Regent, and Caroline of Brunswick, Charlotte was the direct heir to the throne and would have become queen had she lived. Her untimely death during childbirth in November 1817 caused a nationwide outpouring of grief, and commemorative ceramics like this were created in tribute.
The set features black transfer decoration showing Britannia mourning at a classical tomb, flanked by weeping angels and a globe, along with the inscription "TO THE MEMORY OF PRINCESS CHARLOTTE." Each piece is bordered with puce lustre bands, typical of high-quality early 19th-century Staffordshire pottery.
