Stunning antique porcelain figurine of an aristocratic gentleman, his deep blue jacket accentuating the golden gilt of his garments and the pink of his pantaloons.
Marked with a pseudo-Derby mark, with the same red crown motif and cross. Likely Samson ware, dated to the 19th century. Produced by Samson, Edmé et Cie of Paris, figurines such as these bear pseudo marks as Samson began his career by making service and set piece replacements in the late 1830s. At this point in their early history, before Samson became a name in and of itself, such reproductions were their top-of-the-line goods.
It is well known that in the midst of the 19th century, the moment came when many Samson replicas surpassed their models. The mark used here would in no way fool a porcelain aficionado that it is Derby, and so this isn't simply a pale imitation, but an independent work, proudly standing alone with the mark being simply a clear homage.
"Great men, the most original", as American painted John Sloan said, "borrowed from everybody". And Samson's borrowing from the finest British porcelain cemented their position in art porcelain history.
Excellent antique condition, no sign of damage, restoration, and full preservation of gilt and paint. Please carefully regard all photos prior to bidding.
