Antique Meissen "The Yellow Lion" Gelber Löwe Hand-Painted Kakiemon Salad or Dinner Plate

This finely hand-painted plate features the renowned "Yellow Lion" (Gelber Löwe) pattern, executed with meticulous detail. Despite the name, the feline depicted in the design closely resembles a tiger rather than a lion, yet the original title has remained unchanged.

The design was first created at Meissen in the early 18th century (circa 1728) as a commission for Augustus the Strong, the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Inspired by the vibrant colours and intricate patterns of Japanese Kakiemon porcelain, this pattern became one of Meissen's most iconic and enduring motifs. Over the centuries, it has been reproduced and adapted, with this particular plate dating from the late 19th century.

The plate is fully hallmarked on the reverse with Meissen's blue crossed swords mark, along with the imprint "16". The rim is delicately outlined in brown, a signature feature of this decorative style.

Fantastic condition, nearly like new. There are two small smears of brown paint on the back, likely from the original decoration process.
