A highly expressive antique Japanese Kutani porcelain figure, dating to the Meiji-Taisho period (c. 1880s-1910s), depicting a scholar or kabuki-style character.
The figure is finely modelled with vivid facial features, finely detailed hair, and an animated posture, capturing the dynamic artistry typical of Meiji-Taisho export ceramics from the Kaga region.
The figure wears a richly hand-painted traditional robe, decorated with chrysanthemums, stylised wave motifs, and scrolling peony blossoms, all accented with raised moriage gilding and vibrant enamel colours.
The sash is carefully patterned, and the figure stands wearing finely detailed footwear. The underside is hollow, a common technique for larger porcelain figures of the period to prevent firing stress.
The right hand originally held a small object, likely a fan or scroll, which is now missing, but this does not detract from the visual appeal or the structural integrity of the piece.
