Antique Kyoto Satsuma vase by the Kinkozan workshop, made circa 1895 (Meiji period), in a dramatic cobalt-blue ground with rich gilding and finely painted bird-and-blossom reserves. Although compact, it is finished to a level associated with higher-grade Kyoto output: crisp gilt chrysanthemum motifs on the blue banding, careful shading in the reserves, and a dense moriage pointillist surface that gives the decoration a tactile, jewel-like sparkle.
The pictorial panels show birds among flowering branches, a classic Japanese theme of season and elegance, painted with a confident line and delicate colour transitions. The raised-dot moriage (minute built-up enamel "beading") is applied across the field in very high density—an unmistakable sign of time and labour invested in the surface.
Base mark: square iron-red seal with gilt characters 錦光山造 (Kinkōzan zō), meaning "made by Kinkozan". The seal format and palette are consistent with late-19th-century Kyoto Satsuma, circa the 1890s.
Condition is excellent. Only minimal wear to the gilding at the rim. Examined under UV light: no breaks, restoration, repainting or overpainting detected. Normal kiln grit to the footrim.
A strong collectible: recognised workshop name, desirable blue-and-gold palette, and the fine detail that drives long-term demand for Kinkozan Satsuma.
