A superb late-Meiji Japanese Satsuma vase, circa 1895, richly decorated in polychrome enamels and heavy gilding against a deep cobalt-blue ground, with a fine ivory crackle glaze. The slender profile and flared rim give the piece real gallery presence despite its compact size.
The handwork is genuinely high grade, with carefully modelled faces, densely patterned costumes, flying birds and sweeping wisteria branches. Moriage and raised gilt add tactile relief and depth, creating a surface that catches the light beautifully.
Marked to the base with a red seal 南山 ("Nanzan").
