Desirable Royal Doulton Kingsware SPORTING SQUIRE Dewars Whisky Jug Flask Flagon
Beautiful stoneware whiskey flask or flagon, pear-shaped and bearing a raised motif of a "Sporting Squire" in bas relief on the side, clad in typical fox hunting attire. An upside-down horseshoe talisman adorns his collar.
Since its inception in 1815, Doulton have produced some of the finest English porcelain and ceramic wares the world has seen. In 1901 King Edward VII awarded its Burslem factory the Royal Warrant, allowing that part of the business to adopt new markings and a new name, Royal Doulton; this piece comes from the lauded Kingsware line, thoroughly fired into a deep ochre colour and patinated with a fine, shimmering glaze.
Produced between 1898 and 1939, Kingsware was the brain child of the prodigious Charles Noke, completely unique to Doulton due to the techniques involved never having been replicated since. The characteristic qualities were achieved by painting the design in coloured slips on the inside of the plaster mould, before adding the dark brown slip that would form the body of the piece.
Excellent vintage condition, a piece of the rim is restored/glued, please carefully regard all photos as they are part of the description. The high gloss of Kingsware makes it difficult to photograph.
