Antique porcelain figurine of John Milton leaning on a circular plinth and holding a scroll in his hand, fashioned from fine porcelain painted in enamels and gilt at the Derby Porcelain factory . A very similar figurine is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Derived from a plaster from the London shop of the sculptor Henry Cheere, whose plaster was made as the companion to a reproduction of William Kent and Peter Scheemakers' monument to Shakespeare of 1740 (which was also reproduced in Derby porcelain), which may have been modeled by Cheere himself. The Derby factory first made this model with a plain square base. As fashions changed, the base was replaced with an elaborately scrolled Rococo one, and in the 1780s, with the octagonal fluted slab used here. On the bottom of the figure is the number 297, which was the number used on early Derby models. The site https://antique-marks.com/derby-marks.html reads, "Derby figures with the incised mark‘ N 'are particularly sought after and date to between c1765 and c1785." This piece is dated to circa. 1780-1785.

Condition: Slight changes caused by the age of the figurine: crack on the left hand; crazing on the face and base of the figurine; a few dark spots on the back (on the mantle and at the bottom of the base);a crack that does not come to the surface next to the pseudo-Meissen mark (most likely this is a manufacturing defect); small chip on the base, please see photos. Otherwise, fantastic condition for a figurine almost 250 years old - paintwork is perfectly preserved, minimal loss of gilding.
