A finely carved antique Chinese jade tripod incense burner and cover dating to the late Qing to early Republic period, circa 1900-1920. The piece is carved in the archaistic ding form with three short feet, a rounded body and loose ring handles emerging from stylised mythical beast masks.
The dark spinach-green jade shows deep almost black tonal depth under normal light, with olive-green translucency visible around thinner carved areas. Natural cloudy inclusions, mineral veining and tonal variation are visible throughout the stone. The surface retains a rich hand-polished finish associated with traditional hardstone carving.
The removable cover is surmounted by a carved Foo Dog finial with scrolling mane and curled tail. The side handles support free-moving rings carved from the same piece of stone, a technically difficult and time-consuming feature associated with skilled Chinese lapidary work.
Inspired by ancient Chinese ritual ding vessels, carvings of this type became highly popular during the Qing and early Republic period as scholar's table objects and cabinet display pieces. The compact size and deep green stone give the burner strong decorative presence.
