A Victorian refined earthenware paperweight manufactured by James Macintyre & Co., Burslem, circa 1889, and printed with a detailed map of the Western Hemisphere carrying the publication credit "J.G. Bartholomew F.R.G.S.". Conceived as a cartographic curiosity, the domed top depicts North and South America with surrounding oceans and Antarctica, with territorial areas carefully picked out in hand-applied colour.
The paperweight is made in refined earthenware, a fine ceramic body typical of James Macintyre & Co.'s late 19th-century registered decorative wares. The title "Western Hemisphere" and Bartholomew's printed credit appear on the incurved side.
Such pieces were conceived as refined desk objects, reflecting the late Victorian fascination with geography, science, and educational display. The cream-toned porcelain body is shaped with incurved sides and an incised geometric border, enhanced with red line decoration.
The underside bears a blind-stamped MACINTYRE mark and the British registration number Rd. No. 141265, corresponding to the year 1889. James Macintyre & Co. (1849-1897) is well regarded for the quality of its porcelain and its collaborations with leading designers and publishers.
